Turns out, it wasn’t his own work!?! But he was right. Divorce proceedings do eventually complete, and life goes on.
The phrase originates from a medieval Persian adage recorded by Sufi poets like Attar of Nishapur, based on a fable about a king and a magic ring. It was later popularized in English by poet Edward Fitzgerald and famously quoted by Abraham Lincoln in 1859.
